Want to know why I asked Alua to speak?

The first time I heard Alua say "thank you so much for giving me a minute of your life to think about the end of it" my life changed.

We all have those moments, right? Those moments in our lives that change our path, nudge us a different way, allow us to see from a new perspective.

Hearing her was one of those moments for me.

I don't exactly remember how I found Alua.

I do know that it was on Instagram and it was years ago, somewhere in that pandemic altered state we were all in.

Remember that?

From that very first reel of hers that I watched, I connected to Alua's message.

Fast forward to April 25, 2024.

Alua was speaking in Seattle and I had a ticket.

After her talk, she was signing her new book, just announced that day as a NYTimes Bestseller.

I was third in line.

I knew I wanted to ask her to speak. I knew that she was at the top of the short list Kyona and I had dreamed about.

I knew that if I didn't ask, the answer would be no.

So I asked.

I asked for the women who have not yet found Alua. Who have not yet heard her say thank you so much for giving me a minute of your life to think about the end of it."

For all of us women who take such care with our families, our friends, our communities.

I asked because we need to hear what Alua has learned as she has been a companion to the dying and their families.

To know that end of life doesn't have to be something to fear.

To know that there are people who can help us, who can bring community to us and hold space for our grief.

And, I asked for me.

Because as I imagine my end of life, I see my only child, my lovely, sensitive son, there at my side. And I am comforted as I imagine the death doula who will be there to support us both.

Let's normalize talking about death and contemplating our end of life.

Let's normalize having a death doula to companion us on this journey.

Alua answered "yes" to my question.

I hope you can join us on Thursday, October 3 as we're in conversation with Alua Arthur, Death Doula and NYTimes Bestselling Author of "Briefly Perfectly Human" at 8pm EDT/5pm PDT. Sign up below for your free ticket.

with care,

Alex
